Enjoy a holiday home in Puszta, the most tranquil region in Hungary
An exclave of the Eurasian Steppe, Puszta, which means 'empty' or 'bare', is a grassland biome on the Great Hungarian Plain around the River Tisza which covers parts of Hungary and the Austrian Burgenland. The region is populated with holiday rentals, holiday homes and holiday apartments to suit all tastes and budgets in locations such as Cserkeszolo and Abadszalok.
Nature and adventure in Pustza
The region's extensive grasslands are characterised by the sand dunes, forests and freshwater marshes that flow along the floodplains of ancient rivers and are home to abundant wild life. Lake Tisza, with its hunting and fishing opportunities, is a popular destination in which to rent a holiday apartment and visitors can indulge in cycling, fishing, boating and horseback riding as well as swimming and jet skiing. The bird reserve in Tiszavalk is superb for sighting rare species. Three hundred species of birds are found here. The Hortobágy National Park is a must visit for families with kids who will enjoy the frequent sightings of the spiral horned Racka sheep, Hungarian grey cattle, stud horses and buffaloes.
A land of culture and tradition
Puszta was where the popular Hungarian dish of gulyás (goulash) was invented by shephards who put all their food in a single pot to simmer. Ancient festivals and traditions are celebrated with much fervor in the heart of the grasslands. For a taste of the traditional culture and architecture, visit Debrecen, Hungary's second largest city also known as 'Calvinist Rome'. The huge university and main square are beautiful and holiday houses and holiday rentals are in plentiful supply. Szeged's brick red cathedral is as popular as its fish soup, paprika and salami. Don't miss the Art Nouveau Cifra Palace and the attractive Kecskemét Art Gallery in the university town of Kecskemét. Stop by the spa town of Hajdúszoboszló, the largest spa complex in Europe, and relax in one of its many thermal baths when you book a holiday house in the largest continuous grassland in Europe.
