Cultural attractions and preserved island heritage
There is evidence of human life on the islands of Cres and Losinj dating back to 7,000 BCE. The remains of ancient buildings, numerous Middle Age churches, preserved works of art, settlements and former seafaring and trade centers more than 3,000 years old are attractions of day trips and photo albums upon return from vacation. In the waters of Losinj, an Apoxyomenus, a bronze statue of an athlete in actual size, was found. This is one of the most valuable ancient findings in the world, an original work of the Greek sculpturer Lysippus from 4th ct. BCE. A copy of the statue is exhibited in the museum and gallery of the Venetian Tower in Veli Losinj.

The primary criteria for the evaluation were: contribution to the conservation of nature and cultural heritage, community/destination involvement and advantages, educational features, business viability, and innovation. On behalf of Croatia and Lošinj, the award was received by Katarina Hauptfeld, president of Skål Club International Kvarner and Croatian representative in the Skål International Council. On 29 September 2013., during the opening of the 74th SKAL World Congress, which was for the first time held on a cruise ship Carnival Glory, which departured from New York.
The reasons behind Lošinj's success lie in a carefully planned destination management which is a reflection of synergy between the town and tourism office. The Town of Mali Lošinj and the Tourism Office take great care that the development of tourism is conducted to the satisfaction of the island's locals and guests. Because of this and in cooperation with Institute for Tourism, the Programme of sustainable development of tourism was adopted this year which builds on the existing positioning of “Lošinj – the island of vitality”. The programme develops and supports previous actions, protection of natural and socio-cultural resources, and economic sustainability.
The main guidelines of the programme are the importance of environment protection and biodiversity conservation, development of Lošinj's scents and flavours project, positioning and development of Lošinj as aromatherapy destination project, a whole range of thematic scented facilities with island's essential oils, Lošinj's natural cosmetics line, education, health tourism realisation, measuring service quality, and preservation of seabed and coastline, responsible management of marine resources, supporting the Blue World Institute of Marine Research and Conservation, education institutions, associations, educational and sports clubs.
Town of Mali Lošinj has plans for infrastructural investments in the future, as well as restoration and improvement of the quality of accommodation in existing hotels, campsites, and private apartments. Lošinj's next focus will be on the introduction of a new model of waste and water management, coupled with a continuous support of energy efficiency, promotion of environmentally friendly construction of tourism facilities, new parking spaces, creation of offers for local marine transport between small towns and a whole range of 30 programmes that are listed in the Sustainable Development Project by 2020. and its sub-programmes.
In order to get a comprehensive tourism product, apart from commitment to the sustainable tourism development and infrastructural investments, Lošinj will also work on the growth of cultural and health tourism, as well as educational projects.
There are also plans for projects concerning the protection of cultural identity through increasing awareness of values of Lošinj's cultural heritage and revitalisation of Osor as a city of culture, followed by preparations for the arrival of Apoxyomenos at the Kvarner Palace.
Within the economic sustainability project the following activities are carried out and intensified: the production, processing, and sales chain of local eco-products – Lošinj eco-cluster, extension of the Lošinj Airport runway, opening of a new eco-marina, themed beaches, cycling paths management and cycling network growth, additional renovation and equipment of existing 280 km of hiking paths and trails across five islands of the archipelago, and finally continuous monitoring of the locals and guests' attitudes by means of online surveys, mystery shoppers, etc.
„The development of tourism on Lošinj with quality partners in the destination is a great concept that has been recognised worldwide. Educational programmes, encouraging human potential, regulated utilities, environmental protection, land use plans respecting the preservation of nature, quality development and planning, high quality of service, quality development and the future of the destination were all elements that received high marks. They are precisely the basis for the development of the Lošinj archipelago in the future,” said Mr. Gari Cappelli, the Mayor of Mali Lošinj.
„Lošinj is an excellent example of destination management – developing an overall tourism product while respecting sustainable development. Only such management of tourism products will bring us the desired competitiveness, which is consistent with the most important resource that we have, and that is our environment. Congratulations to the local government and Tourism Office, which, together with their private partners, have achieved synergy that is recognised by this award,“ stressed Tourism Minister, Mr. Darko Lorencin.

This award is an additional proof and confirmation of the right direction and persistence that all tourism professionals and people involved in the improvement and creation of tourism offer of this wonderful island have shown in the recent years. Allow me to congratulate everyone on the beautiful autumn gift that comes at the right moment and indeed in the right place where sustainable development is actually a lifestyle.”

This award is not only an acknowledgment but also an inspiration for further development of the island because of the great importance of tourism on the development and the overall economy of the island, as well as on a balanced regional development of our beautiful country,” said Ms. Leila Krešić-Jurić, Director of Croatian Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Division, and a member of Skål.
Having heard this fantastic news, Dr. Sc.
