So lovely and near at the same time

Istria | The way to the next vacation can sometimes be so close: Just a few hours journey time by car it takes to reach the sunny peninsula Istria in Croatia when approaching from Italy. The abundance of Mediterranean vegetation appears here particularly in form of picturesque wine hills, lush green forests and olive groves which stretch out along the turquoise coloured Mediterranean Sea. Vacationers appreciate Istria not only for its delightful landscape but also for its many great beaches which can be found here along Croatian Adriatic Coast. Particularly nice conditions for a beach vacation and at the same time a big choice of holiday apartments and houses are offered for example in Medulin which is a former fishing town on the southern tip of Istria. The blue sea and the marvellous beaches don’t only lure sun lovers and occasional swimmers: Whether windsurfing or diving – Medulin is also an ideal water sport area. Not far away from Medulin is the town of Pula. In Istria’s biggest town – and at the same time the cultural and economic centre – you can visit the gigantic amphitheatre and the well preserved Augustus Temple both dating back to the Roman era. The popular resort Poreč situated in the western part of Istria has a number of nice beaches and is also an ideal starting point of many day trips – for example to the islands of Brijuni or into the idyllic hinterland. Those who are on the search for a tan might want to pop to one of the many offshore islands that are serviced by boat shuttles where you can alternatively seek a shady place. If you are looking to cool off a visit to a nearby limestone cave Baredine could be a good option. Another great place to recharge your batteries is the charming spa resort Opatija which lies on the other side Istria on the border to Kvarner Gulf.

atraveo provides you with more than 9,500 holiday apartments and houses in Istria. Many of them are situated around the bigger towns of Pula, Poreč, Medulin, Rabac and Umag. But there are also some pretty holiday homes on offer away from the major centres. You can find more information and tips also in the holiday home selection for Istria.

“Pomer itself is very quiet (low season in late September), perfect and relax and reenergize. Kieß Stone beach and ocean (at Camping - is also very nice) is well located, clean and with good views. Swimming and windsurfing possible there. Restaurants, a bar, a kiosk and bakers are available in town. The restaurant "Konoba Fontana" has us so well convinced by food, drink and friendliness of the staff that we were dine there in one week 4 times :-)
Larger cities (Medulin, Pula, Prementura), and the National Park Kamenjak are easy to reach by car.”

“The place Pomer is located between the main tourist towns of Pula and Medulin. In contrast to the surrounding villages Pomer is quiet and has a uncrowded beach where you can easily find a shady place.
Further features of the site over a couple of very good restaurants, but can otherwise be next to a bakery offer no further shopping. The nearest large supermarket is however by car distance only 5-10 minutes.
For families or calm loving vacationers a very nice place.”

This is how holiday rental owners described Pomer

Pomer
In the depth of a deep bay, protected from cold winds and lulled by the shade of pines, lies the humble Pomer. Quiet, relaxed and wistful, Pomer is a place of revived memories, which are returning with every wave on its coast. The sea is undoubtedly the main attraction ...

in this corner of a paradise. Its azure colour hides the richness of flavors, and fragrances, that it has so generously provided for thousands of years. The beauty of this bay, and its benefits, were noted even by the ancient Romans, who named it Pomoerium, and built their luxurious spas, villas and a little harbor here.
This old fishing town has embraced modern nomads, who are eager for the old Mediterranean, its customs and beauty. Even today, delicious shells are grown here, prepared according to old recipes, and seasoned with freshly picked herbs. Fish from these waters has all the flavours of pure sea, so when served with the golden olive oil, and followed by the local wine, it conjures up all of nature's wealth. Because of its attractiveness, the Pomer marina is known to many sailors, who keep coming back to it. For those true to the spirit of sports, Pomer offers a variety of sports - windsurfing, volleyball, cycling and many others... With friendly hosts, great food and wine, a gentle breeze and peace disturbed only by the sound of waves, Pomer is truly a place worth visiting and staying at.

History
In prehistoric times, a settlement was located nearby, a hillfort, whose inhabitants built pile dwellings on the territory of present-day Pomer. Its true emergence Pomer owes to the Roman rule, namely to the powerful Roman Aranum family. They named it Pomoerium, and here built a luxury spa, aqueduct, luxurious villas, and facilities for the production of oil, wine and fruits of the earth. After the fall of Rome, during the reign of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century, a large early Christian basilica was built, at the site of the Roman villa. According to some records, several stone sarcophagus were also found here. Around the 12th century, a Benedictine abbey was built here, which was abandoned in the 14th century. Then the place was called Fontanelle di S.Giovanni (Springs of St. John) because of the springs of drinking water that exist, even today, on the coast. In 1149, Pomer fell under the Venetian rule, where it remained until the end of the 18th century. Wars and disease greatly reduced the population, so by the end of the 16th century, the population was settled here, first from Bologna and then from the Balkans. In the early 19th century, it fell briefly under the French rule, which soon became replaced by the Austro-Hungarian rule, during which Pomer was experiencing progress. After the World War 1, it fell under the rule of Italy, which lasted until the arrival of the Germans during the World War 2. The end of the war marked the liberation of Pomer, and its annexation to the former Yugoslavia, and finally, in 1991, Pomer became a part of Croatia.
