This is how holiday rental owners described Oliveto Lario
show more quintals of olives, which give a precious oil .
It was created by the union of three locations: Onno, Vassena and Limonta.
The center of the village of Onno is located at the foot of a high cliff called the Stone of Onno. Its historical core was once located further south, near the church of St. Anne, which still exists. This until 1896, when a flood destroyed the village.
The middle fraction, Vassena, where there is the city hall, seems to have been a land virtually uninhabited until around the year one thousand. It was founded by fishermen and farmers coming from Mandello del Lario, facing the opposite bank, after passing through the few kilometers of the lake with the typical rowboats then called " Lucie".
The village of Limonta has more ancient origins. In the year 835, Emperor Lotario gave that land to the Abbots of the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, as an imperial fief (together with Civenna and Campione d'Italia), and it remained so for eight centuries until, in 1797, it was annexed to the Cisalpine Republic.
Significant at Limonta:
The church of S. Ambrogio e Bernardo, of medieval origin and rebuilt in 1673. Inside, a lombard polyptych of 1400 and a "Sacra conservazione" of the Venetian school of the sixteenth century.
Upstream of the churchyard stands a mighty dry wall, built in the time of Empress Maria Teresa of Austria, in the protection of the church.
The Shrine of the Madonna del Moletto, built on a rock overlooking the lake, on the border with Bellagio. It consists of two overlapping chapels, the lower dating back to 1606, and the upper dating back to 1624, and has an altar of the thirteenth century, as well as an important cycle of frescoes by the Recchi brothers.
A few kilometers from Limonta there is Bellagio, " the pearl of Lake Como", renowned resort, situated at the head of a promontory that divides the two branches of Lake Como.
Due to its location, it enjoys a splendid view of the Alps.
Bellagio is a combination of picturesque paths with stairways full of shops and renowned restaurants.
Besides visiting various villas and gardens, from Bellagio you can take numerous trips and excursions by foot, by car or by ferry-boat.
Rent a holiday home in Lake Como in the heart of Lombardy
Lake Como | A holiday rental or holiday house in Lake Como is the best way to experience one of the most beautiful regions in Italy. Shaped like an elongated 'Y', in the northern region of Lombardy, Lake Como's glacial waters stretch from forested hills to the alps, its shoreline populated with charming villas and resort towns. A holiday house or holiday rental provides the freedom to explore the region's wide range of attractions, from vibrant marketplaces in old town squares to a stroll in the crisp mountain air of a secluded valley. Rent a holiday home in Lake Como and enjoy a satisfying holiday for all the family.
Beautiful holiday rentals for active sports lovers
In addition to its sublime natural beauty, Lake Como offers a wealth of sporting activities. A holiday house near the lakeshore is the ideal base for water skiing, windsurfing and sailing and many companies offer boat and equipment rental close by. Thanks to the extensive network of trails which cut through the surrounding hills offering spectacular panoramic views, hiking is another popular pastime that can be enjoyed whilst staying at a holiday home in Lake Como. In particular, the west side of the lake is known for the 10 km Lake Como Greenway, while the quaint town of Menaggio provides dozens of trails and a friendly tourist office to help you locate them.
Taste traditional Italian life with a Lake Como holiday apartment
People have been drawn to the idyllic shores of Lake Como for centuries but with historic towns and villages bursting with Italian charm, the area has more to offer than just its beautiful scenery. A holiday apartment in the town of Como, for instance, offers the sights and sounds of a busy Saturday farmer's market, unchanged for centuries inside the town's medieval walls. With its ancient alleyways winding down to the shoreside, Varenna, on the east side of Lake Como, is perhaps the region's most elegant town. A short climb up the hill to Vezio Castle offers superb panoramic views across Lake Como.
