There is much to see in the area as well as Lisbon and Sintra are doing well. A car is a must. Nazaré and Penice are very nice places coast.”

This is how holiday rental owners described Obidos

“Re-established upon the foundations that still exist in some of the buildings razzed by the earthquake in 1755, remain no more than a dozen of constructions from that century; give those that survive a light cerographic reconstruction of some architectural details, and, without changing the general disposition of the streets ...

and a group of houses; this is Óbidos, an integral and faithful remaining Portuguese burg from 300 years ago."

It was in these terms that Ramalho Ortigão remembers the secular existence of this magic place, full of history, culture and patrimony.

In fact, Óbidos is a treasure from our country, this medieval village can’t release a long visit because of its several points of interest. Beyond the Village Door, that has in there interior an oratorical dedicated to Nª. Sr.ª. da Graça, it is instantaneously possible to find an enormous attraction that the white houses and the sinuosity of the streets suggest upon the visitant. Churches, windows, staircases and yards are other reference points.

The Óbidos Castle, where the Inn is to be found, might have Roman origins; nevertheless, it was under the Arabic domination that the Fortress won a certain status.

Lágoa de Óbidos (Lagoon) is ideal for the practice of nautical sports, the “Eburobrittium” roman city, the golf course of Praia d’El Rey are other elements that certainly deserve a visit.

Market”, the “June of the Arts” (a contemporary art event), “Opera Festival” and “Christmas Village” attract numerous visitors throughout the year.
Óbidos is located in the West Region, also known as “Silver Coast”, less than 1 hour from the Lisbon Airport, and is famous for its well preserved landscape and natural beauty. This region is also a renowned destination for golf and water sports, for instance, the RIP CURL CUP takes place in this region since 2009.
With a mild climate, unspoiled white sanded beaches and a vast gastronomic offer, the Silver Coast offers the perfect location for serene times of “renewed authenticity”.

Seafood and port wine – Portugal’s culinary delights

Portugal | Portugal has always lived with and from the sea. So don’t miss out on the delicious seafood that is served in one of the many restaurants and will turn your holiday in Portugal into a culinary highlight. Alternatively prepare a delicate maritime dish in the kitchen of your holiday home booked with atraveo. You will be able to get freshly caught fish at every harbour or larger market. Together with fresh vegetables and herbs from the market you can easily prepare a great meal which you can then enjoy on the terrace of your holiday house. Portugal’s national dish is stockfish. Though the dishes seem somewhat peculiar it can be worthwhile giving some a try. The Portuguese are said to know more than 1,000 different ways to prepare those air-dried fish (mainly cod) – so all tastes are catered for.

Not only fish – whether fresh or air-dried – but also the Portuguese wine is known all over the world. The many distinctive features of port wine are very complex with lay persons struggling to ascertain an overview. In most cases the house wine of restaurants or a bottle of Tawney or Colheita port will prove to be a good choice. By the way a good port can be a great present to take back for you loved ones not with you!
Where will you spend your next holiday in Portugal? Popular destination with atraveo customers are the southern coastal region of the Algarve, the western coastal areas Costa de Lisboa, Costa de Prata and Costa Verde as well as the flower island Madeira and Alentejo in the heart of Portugal.
