Cultural attractions and preserved island heritage
There is evidence of human life on the islands of Cres and Losinj dating back to 7,000 BCE. The remains of ancient buildings, numerous Middle Age churches, preserved works of art, settlements and former seafaring and trade centers more than 3,000 years old are attractions of day trips and photo albums upon return from vacation. In the waters of Losinj, an Apoxyomenus, a bronze statue of an athlete in actual size, was found. This is one of the most valuable ancient findings in the world, an original work of the Greek sculpturer Lysippus from 4th ct. BCE. A copy of the statue is exhibited in the museum and gallery of the Venetian Tower in Veli Losinj.
Dolphins of the Losinj maritime zone – a trademark of the island
The waters of Cres and Losinj are a habitat of around 150 dolphins. The most common among them is the so called good porpoise, and the common dolphin. When they are not searching for food, they swim in close groups near the surface, play and perform their famous jumps. They are an unforgettable experience and, as the griffon vultures on Cres, one of the main features of Losinj. It is a well-known fact that dolphins are one of the indicators of the cleanness and low level of pollution of the sea.

The programme develops and supports previous actions, protection of natural and socio-cultural resources, and economic sustainability.
The main guidelines of the programme are the importance of environment protection and biodiversity conservation, development of Lošinj's scents and flavours project, positioning and development of Lošinj as aromatherapy destination project, a whole range of thematic scented facilities with island's essential oils, Lošinj's natural cosmetics line, education, health tourism realisation, measuring service quality, and preservation of seabed and coastline, responsible management of marine resources, supporting the Blue World Institute of Marine Research and Conservation, education institutions, associations, educational and sports clubs.

Lošinj's next focus will be on the introduction of a new model of waste and water management, coupled with a continuous support of energy efficiency, promotion of environmentally friendly construction of tourism facilities, new parking spaces, creation of offers for local marine transport between small towns and a whole range of 30 programmes that are listed in the Sustainable Development Project by 2020. and its sub-programmes.
In order to get a comprehensive tourism product, apart from commitment to the sustainable tourism development and infrastructural investments, Lošinj will also work on the growth of cultural and health tourism, as well as educational projects.
There are also plans for projects concerning the protection of cultural identity through increasing awareness of values of Lošinj's cultural heritage and revitalisation of Osor as a city of culture, followed by preparations for the arrival of Apoxyomenos at the Kvarner Palace.
Within the economic sustainability project the following activities are carried out and intensified: the production, processing, and sales chain of local eco-products – Lošinj eco-cluster, extension of the Lošinj Airport runway, opening of a new eco-marina, themed beaches, cycling paths management and cycling network growth, additional renovation and equipment of existing 280 km of hiking paths and trails across five islands of the archipelago, and finally continuous monitoring of the locals and guests' attitudes by means of online surveys, mystery shoppers, etc.
„The development of tourism on Lošinj with quality partners in the destination is a great concept that has been recognised worldwide. Educational programmes, encouraging human potential, regulated utilities, environmental protection, land use plans respecting the preservation of nature, quality development and planning, high quality of service, quality development and the future of the destination were all elements that received high marks. They are precisely the basis for the development of the Lošinj archipelago in the future,” said Mr. Gari Cappelli, the Mayor of Mali Lošinj.
„Lošinj is an excellent example of destination management – developing an overall tourism product while respecting sustainable development. Only such management of tourism products will bring us the desired competitiveness, which is consistent with the most important resource that we have, and that is our environment. Congratulations to the local government and Tourism Office, which, together with their private partners, have achieved synergy that is recognised by this award,“ stressed Tourism Minister, Mr. Darko Lorencin.
Meri Matešić, Director of Croatian National Tourist Board, said on this occasion: “I am extremely pleased with the fact that the pearl of our Lošinj – the island of vitality, the Town of Mali Lošinj has received an international award for sustainable development. This award is an additional proof and confirmation of the right direction and persistence that all tourism professionals and people involved in the improvement and creation of tourism offer of this wonderful island have shown in the recent years. Allow me to congratulate everyone on the beautiful autumn gift that comes at the right moment and indeed in the right place where sustainable development is actually a lifestyle.”
“Congratulations to Lošinj, Croatian synonym of “green destination”, which has been recognised internationally. This award is not only an acknowledgment but also an inspiration for further development of the island because of the great importance of tourism on the development and the overall economy of the island, as well as on a balanced regional development of our beautiful country,” said Ms. Leila Krešić-Jurić, Director of Croatian Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Division, and a member of Skål.
Having heard this fantastic news, Dr. Sc. Irena Peršić Živadinov, director of Kvarner County Tourism Office, congratulated the Town of Mali Lošinj Tourism Office and its director Ms. Đurđica Šimičić with the following statement: “This prestigious award to an island in the Kvarner Bay is certainly a reward for the entire region as a tourist destination and for the whole country too. Lošinj is an example to all, but also a pride of Kvarner.”
“Institute for Tourism is extremely proud to have had the opportunity to transfer successfully its knowledge on sustainable development of tourism to the development of Lošinj. We are confident that Lošinj has chosen the right path that will allow the island to retain all its beauty while at the same time it grows into a competitive tourism destination. This award is an incentive to the Town of Mali Lošinj, the Tourism Office, and the tourism economy of the entire island, as well as to the Institute for Tourism to uphold and grow in the the development of sustainable and responsible tourism,” said Dr.Sc. Sanda Čorak, Director of Institute of Tourism. She continued: ” This valuable award also justifies the investments and perspectives that are gained through the development of destination management and strategic destination management. This is why I believe that Lošinj's experience will be a positive example and an encouragement for other Croatian cities to act in the same direction, which means that guided by their own visions while enjoying a full support of the Croatian National Tourist Board and securing the necessary knowledge, they actively participate in building the Croatian tourism product that we all desire.”
“This is a moment when the Tourism Office gains professional support and encouragement for the work that we have been doing and the direction we have taken for the tourism of the Lošinj archipelago. We are furthering synergy, destination management, innovations and creativity, and we are responsible in managing our destination. This is a great honour for tourism professionals and citizens of Lošinj, but it also brings responsibility to maintain the quality of work and implementation of future projects,” said Ms. Đurdica Šimičić, director of Town of Mali Lošinj Tourism Office.
