Experience Lombardy’s turbulent history at first hand
During the time of the Roman Empire, the in the north of Italy situated Lombardy belonged to Gallia Transpadana and only to the end of the 4th century did it become part of the province Liguria. In the time of the mass migration the region was conquered by Visigoths. In the subsequent centuries the region changed its ruler frequently until parts of Lombardy were given to the Pope which from then on belonged to the Papal States. The remaining part of the area was fiercely fought over. In the 14th century Milan eventually conquered large parts of Lombardy and founded the Duchy of Milan, the predecessor of the contemporary region Lombardy in Italy. In the following centuries Lombardy was again bitterly contested by several great powers until it left the Holy Roman Entire with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Despite this the history of the region remained turbulent. Only after the Austrian reign, the Montenotte Campaign under Napoleon, the War of the Second Coalition and the Italian Unification Lombardy became an Italian province. If you want to follow the tracks of the turbulent Lombard history a holiday house in Lombardy is the ideal starting point for such a journey.
