Seafood and port wine – Portugal’s culinary delights

Portugal | Portugal has always lived with and from the sea. So don’t miss out on the delicious seafood that is served in one of the many restaurants and will turn your holiday in Portugal into a culinary highlight. Alternatively prepare a delicate maritime dish in the kitchen of your holiday home booked with atraveo. You will be able to get freshly caught fish at every harbour or larger market. Together with fresh vegetables and herbs from the market you can easily prepare a great meal which you can then enjoy on the terrace of your holiday house. Portugal’s national dish is stockfish. Though the dishes seem somewhat peculiar it can be worthwhile giving some a try. The Portuguese are said to know more than 1,000 different ways to prepare those air-dried fish (mainly cod) – so all tastes are catered for.

Not only fish – whether fresh or air-dried – but also the Portuguese wine is known all over the world. The many distinctive features of port wine are very complex with lay persons struggling to ascertain an overview. In most cases the house wine of restaurants or a bottle of Tawney or Colheita port will prove to be a good choice. By the way a good port can be a great present to take back for you loved ones not with you!
Where will you spend your next holiday in Portugal? Popular destination with atraveo customers are the southern coastal region of the Algarve, the western coastal areas Costa de Lisboa, Costa de Prata and Costa Verde as well as the flower island Madeira and Alentejo in the heart of Portugal.

From the Algarve to the Azores

Portugal is a beautiful country to visit. The seafaring nation steeped in tradition cannot only look back on a long and eventful past but today is also one of the most popular destinations for holiday home vacations in Europe. atraveo offers you more than 1,300 holiday apartments and houses all over Portugal which will surely include the perfect domicile for your next holiday. Before commencing the search you should decide which region in Portugal you want to visit.

A little tip: Especially popular with atraveo customers are the heavenly beaches and cliff coasts of the Algarve in the South of Portugal close to the Spanish border.
Also very popular are the coastal regions of Costa de Lisboa, Costa de Prata and Costa Verde. On atraveo you can also find a large selection of pretty and well furnished holiday homes. In its beautiful heartland Portugal impresses with its rich and diverse landscape. Why not visit Alentejo or the lush green area in the north of Portugal.

When on holiday in Portugal you should not miss out on the smaller and larger cities such as Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Aveiro or Faro. Here you can enjoy a shopping tour or just take a nice stroll through the old alleys and enjoy the unique and long-standing culture of the country on the Iberian Peninsula.

A very special travel destination are the islands of the Azores and the beautiful flower island Madeira in the midst the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira lures with its subtropical climate, enchanting landscape and lush vegetation whilst the volcano islands of the Azores located in the Atlantic are a unique place and offer a lot of space for individual holiday makers.

In the same street there is a great restaurant "Martinez", tapas etc. In the city we are almost always took a taxi, costs about 6 €, is thus four not much more expensive than the Metro (1.40 € ). Lisbon is colorful, a bit shabby, modern, old, rocked and agile, pretty much what we humans also.”

The parish of Lapa was created on the 11th February 1770 by the Cardinal Archbishop D. Francisco de Saldanha in the Igreja Nova da Lapa, which is possibly the first religious edification to be built after the earthquake of 1755.

“Lapa da Moura”, near by Pampulha, outside the present limits of the parish.

This denomination spread to North and East and orally it lost its suffix “da Moura”.

In the beginning of the XVIII century, before Lapa was a part of the administrative limits of the city, Lapa embraced three important roads which led to Convento de São Bento da Saúde (present Palácio de São Bento, headquarters of the Assembly of the Republic), the Convento da Nossa Senhora da Estrela (where since 1837 is the Militar Hospital) and other buildings.

Lapa has also one of the most beautiful gardens in Lisbon; the Jardim da Guerra Junqueiro, mostly known as Jardim da Estrela.

In this parish are gathered a great part of the embassies of foreign countries in Portugal, such as: Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Finland, Indonesia, Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Romania, Sweden, and Switzerland.

There we can also find the Assembly of the Republic (Palácio de São Bento) and the official residence of the Portuguese Prime Minister.

Close to the apartment, take a walk in the popular neighbourhoods of Alfama and Graça, while visiting:
• Panteão Nacional (National Pantheon), one of the most representative examples of Baroque architecture, built on an octogonal floor plan centred on a Greek cross with the arms rounded in the style of Bramante;
• Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, a sixteenth century church and monastery with a Renais sance façade which has in its cloisters a series of interesting Portuguese tile (azulejo) panels inspired by La Fontaine’s fables.

Have fun during the day and at night:
• Feira da Ladra (Thieves' Market), a picturesque flea market where you will find all you want. It attracts crowds looking for that second-hand bargain and runs every Tuesday and Saturday in Campo de Santa Clara;
• Lux, the undisputed king of all clubs in Lisbon, featuring an always-fabulous interior, a spectacular rooftop terrace overlooking the river, special theme parties and the best DJs (often including internationally renowned names).

when saying goodbye to sailors at the time of the great Portuguese maritime discoveries.

This is why there are many important Manueline monuments shining in the light of Lisbon and its surrounding region, such as the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The modern leisure area of the Parque das Nações proves that Lisbon still maintains its close links with the river today. Here, for example, you will find the distinctive mark of Álvaro Siza Vieira on one of the buildings that hosted the last world exposition of the 20th century, dedicated to the theme of the oceans. In contrast to this, do not miss the picturesque mediaeval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, above which stands the castle. This castle, matched by Bairro Alto on the other hill, leads down to the downtown city centre known as the Baixa pombalina.

Lisbon is also at the centre of a region rich in diversity.
Just outside the city are the seaside resort of Estoril and the romantic hills of the Serra de Sintra, where the perfect bond between palaces and nature led to the area being classified as a world heritage site. It is the sea, the climate and the stunning nature that give this region its peculiar energy. Its many parks and nature reserves encourage visitors to spend time in the open air, enjoying the peace and quiet of a round of golf or the adrenaline buzz of surfing. Perhaps this is why Lisbon is a city that is full of life. Here people have an exuberant party spirit, doing things spontaneously for the sheer pleasure of spending time in the company of others.

To end your day you could experience the traditional and relaxed atmosphere of a Fado House. Or, if you’ve still got enough energy left, pop into the various discos along the banks of the river and dance until the early hours. In fact why not stay up until dawn and take in the day-break on the banks of the River Tagus, before enjoying a well-earned sleep?

NEW: Lisbon has just been voted “Best Destination 2010 – European Consumers Choice”, based on the voting results from a list of ten cities proposed by the European Consumers Choice, an independent association headquartered in Brussels.

The criteria considered for this vote – which took place from December 2009 to January 2010 and included, for the first time, cities – took into account Lisbon’s quality of life and infrastructures, as well as its cultural and tourism offerings. For the European Consumers Choice, the vote reflects “a city that was able to preserve all of its soul and offer a point of entry for Tourism without forgetting its social and cultural riches”.
