The climate is mild throughout the year due to the natural protection of the hills which are surrounding the village.
Tourism is the most important economic resource. The cultivation of olives and citrus fruits in the hill and mountain area as well as fishing is of major significance too.
Gardone has become an important tourist destination at the end of the 18. century, due to the conviction of some powerful German tourists and doctors that the region would have a beneficial effect to health. Luigi Wimmer a man of Austrian origins who spent a long time in Gardone has built the first big hotel in this area and promoted its image in whole Europe. Famous personalities from all over Europe came to Gardone Riviera to spend their cure stay there.
The most popular sight is the property of the poet Gabriele from 1912 until 1938, called “Vittoriale degli Italiani” in “Gardone Sopra”. In the buildings, surrounded by several gardens, is the grave of the poet, the open air theatre, the D’Annunzio museum and the library located.
Fasano Sopra lies up in the olive hill a little way north of Gardone. It is a characteristic ancient hamlet dating back to the middle ages, affording some wonderful views of the lake, particularly in the middle of the afternoon.

Gardone Riviera is one of the most elegant and outstanding resorts on the banks of Lake Garda on account of its varied and lavish vegetation, favored by the mild climate and architectural setting.
The 'Garden City' was developed as a tourist resort during the latter part of the 19th century.
The various buildings in their many styles bears witness to the tastes of the cosmopolitan guests who flocked to the Riviera from late last century until just before the Second World War. Among the prominent personalities who made Gardone their home we find the Poet Gabriele D'Annunzio who lived at the Villa Cargnacco which was to become known as the Vittoriale degli Italiani in 1921.
Gardone has regained much of its charm and appeal to the fashionable and discerning European traveler, remaining quiet and sophisticated. It's miniature gulf is sheltered by an ample crown of mountains, the hills are thick with bay trees, olive, cypress, pine, oleander and aloe while the gardens bear fine examples of roses, lemons, mimosas, palms, magnolias and cedars.
In Summer, concerts are held along the lake front and in various piazzas and theatres.
THINGS TO SEE IN GARDONE
Villa Alba sits in the center of a marvelous park, reached by means of an expansive staircase. It was commissioned at the beginning of this century by the Austrian Industrialist Langensiepen and designed by Shafter, a studied imitation of the monuments of the Acropolis in Athens on the express desire of the client. The facade remains you of the Parthenon. On the left there is a small portico similar to that of the Erecteum with elegant caryatids.
Today the Villa is used as a conference center, but the grounds are still worth a visit.
VITTORIALE DEGLI ITALIANI
The 'Vittoriale degli Italiani' is the monumental city-home, created by the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio between 1921 and 1938 on Lake Garda. The Vittoriale is not only an impressive house, but also comprises streets and squares, gardens, rivers, theatres and museums.
THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF GARDONE
In 1903 an Austrian dentist living by Lake Garda started an extraordinary project, to turn two and a half acres of neglected vineyards into a lush garden of streams, pools and secret pathways.
The garden today is lush and green, shaded by huge exotic trees. Behind the house are rare conifers, palms, arum lilies and thousands of shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Water loving plants flourish beside the streams and lakes. The garden is filled with the sound of running water.
The house and gardens have now been sold to the Austrian painter Andre Heller but are still open to the public.
