Amongst lemon trees and olive groves

Lake Garda | Lake Garda looks like a sea amidst the mountains. Even Goethe praised the spectacular scenery during a stay in 1786: “How I wish my friends could be here with me for a moment so they could rejoice in this view in front of me. Tonight I could have been in Verona but this admirable natural scenery was still lying next to me. An exquisite spectacle, Lake Garda, which I did not want to miss and I was gloriously rewarded for my circuitous route.”

Until this day you are offered numerous spectacular panoramic views around Lake Garda. When standing in Riva del Garda at the northern bank of the lake and you let your gaze wander towards the south you will understand what Goethe so longingly meant. The deep blue water surface sparkles amidst steep and rugged mountain slopes surrounded by green hillsides and these only cut through occasionally by a white sailing boat. On your way to the southern bank you are spoilt for choice. There are scenic roads along the banks on both sides of the lake that lead through smaller and larger villages nestled up in the hillsides. The Gardesana Occidentale runs along the western embankment through Limone, Gargnano and Salo and passes lemon as well as olive groves which are spread out over the slopes. Driving along the other side of Gardesana Orientale you will mainly see olives growing on the hillsides which are the source of the excellent olive oil produced around Lake Garda. Especially the picturesque villages of Malcesine, Torri del Benaco and Garda are ideal for a short stroll through town. In the background ascends Monte Baldo – with more than 2,000 metre the highest mountain around the lake.

Driving further to the south the scenery becomes hilly and the rough rocks of the Alps disappear gradually. In the Po Valley the landscape is dominated by green and turquoise colours and here the lake is at its broadest without being confined by the corset of restrictive rock formations. On the south bank you are able to find the most important and well-known villages: Peschiera, Sirminone or Desenzano.

You can truly discover and experience a lot! There is way too much to list or mention here. Come and find out for yourself!

“Very nice restaurant / pizzeria (Nablus) "around the corner" or rather "declining" (definitely reserve), 10 minutes more (also downhill) is the Riolet restaurant with spectacular views from the terrace and primarily grills. Gardone Sopra is just a few minutes, here there are nice additional restaurants, 2-3 bars with ice cream parlor, and smaller shops such as bakers, butchers, greengrocers and an ATM. Highly recommended here: Pizzeria Mario, very nice restaurateur with heart for children!
From here, you are about 15 minutes walking on the lake. Larger supermarkets there are, for example, in Maderno / Toscolano (about 10 minutes by car)”

You also have the ferryboat to other nice places. Gardone Riviera is centrally located to visit all sides of Lake Garda. Eg. Sirimione but Tignale, Tremosine with its high mountains.”

This is how holiday rental owners described Gardone Riviera

Gardone is located at the western shore of Lake Garda, approx. 40 km far from Brescia and belongs to the regional park “Alto Garda Bresciano”. The municipality consist of eight districts, which are scattered over lake and hills.

The surrounding area of Gardone Riviera is an incomparable „botanical garden“ where ...

the typical Mediterranean, subtropical and central European vegetation can be found. The botanical garden “Hruska” and the villa Alba with the beautiful community park, today congress centre, are worth seeing.

The climate is mild throughout the year due to the natural protection of the hills which are surrounding the village.

Tourism is the most important economic resource. The cultivation of olives and citrus fruits in the hill and mountain area as well as fishing is of major significance too.

Gardone has become an important tourist destination at the end of the 18. century, due to the conviction of some powerful German tourists and doctors that the region would have a beneficial effect to health. Luigi Wimmer a man of Austrian origins who spent a long time in Gardone has built the first big hotel in this area and promoted its image in whole Europe. Famous personalities from all over Europe came to Gardone Riviera to spend their cure stay there.

The most popular sight is the property of the poet Gabriele from 1912 until 1938, called “Vittoriale degli Italiani” in “Gardone Sopra”. In the buildings, surrounded by several gardens, is the grave of the poet, the open air theatre, the D’Annunzio museum and the library located.

GARDONE RIVIERA

Gardone Riviera is one of the most elegant and outstanding resorts on the banks of Lake Garda on account of its varied and lavish vegetation, favored by the mild climate and architectural setting.
The 'Garden City' was developed as a tourist resort during the latter part of the 19th century.

The various buildings in their many styles bears witness to the tastes of the cosmopolitan guests who flocked to the Riviera from late last century until just before the Second World War. Among the prominent personalities who made Gardone their home we find the Poet Gabriele D'Annunzio who lived at the Villa Cargnacco which was to become known as the Vittoriale degli Italiani in 1921.

Gardone has regained much of its charm and appeal to the fashionable and discerning European traveler, remaining quiet and sophisticated. It's miniature gulf is sheltered by an ample crown of mountains, the hills are thick with bay trees, olive, cypress, pine, oleander and aloe while the gardens bear fine examples of roses, lemons, mimosas, palms, magnolias and cedars.
In Summer, concerts are held along the lake front and in various piazzas and theatres.

THINGS TO SEE IN GARDONE

VILLA ALBA
Villa Alba sits in the center of a marvelous park, reached by means of an expansive staircase. It was commissioned at the beginning of this century by the Austrian Industrialist Langensiepen and designed by Shafter, a studied imitation of the monuments of the Acropolis in Athens on the express desire of the client. The facade remains you of the Parthenon. On the left there is a small portico similar to that of the Erecteum with elegant caryatids.
Today the Villa is used as a conference center, but the grounds are still worth a visit.

VITTORIALE DEGLI ITALIANI
The 'Vittoriale degli Italiani' is the monumental city-home, created by the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio between 1921 and 1938 on Lake Garda. The Vittoriale is not only an impressive house, but also comprises streets and squares, gardens, rivers, theatres and museums.

THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF GARDONE
In 1903 an Austrian dentist living by Lake Garda started an extraordinary project, to turn two and a half acres of neglected vineyards into a lush garden of streams, pools and secret pathways.
The garden today is lush and green, shaded by huge exotic trees. Behind the house are rare conifers, palms, arum lilies and thousands of shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Water loving plants flourish beside the streams and lakes. The garden is filled with the sound of running water.
The house and gardens have now been sold to the Austrian painter Andre Heller but are still open to the public.
