This is how holiday rental owners described Entrevaux
How to get to our apartment:
1 Cross the bridge and the Var River. Take the first street to the right. Our door is the second door on the right.
Pleasant walks in Entrevaux
1 A walk along the Var River: go to the village square in the village and ...
show more turn to the left to the Porte Guillaume or Porte de France. A path will lead you along the river to the lake and camping place. You can swim in the lake, rent a boat or sign up for a rafting trip on the Var.
2 A hike up to the Citadel: you can pay a fee and walk up and down the regular way. There is another way for hikers that branches from the Chemin des Oliviers: You walk through the village toward the church, pass through the Porte d’Italie and follow the Chemin des Oliviers until a trail goes up the hillside to the left. You follow this through gardens and olive groves. It arrivse at the backside of the Citadel. Enjoy a fantastic view and then go down the regular path and out through the gate at the bottom.
3 A walk with nice views: you go through the main gate Porte Royale, cross the river, the street and walk toward the restaurant Pont-Levi. Take the road to the left and follow it. You pass the cemetery and a little further is a bench from where you have a great view of Entrevaux. If you follow the road further you can enjoy views of wilderness and deep canyons. There is not much traffic.
Where to eat in Entrevaux
1 The Restaurant Pont Levi, across the bridge (you can see it from the window) is by far the best restaurant in the vicinity. The food is delicious, the service wonderful and the owners Patrick and Emma are gracious hosts. Patrick speaks English and German, so do his sons who often help out. On weekends the terrace gets very crowded and you might want to make reservations. There is no warm food served at night, only at noon. (ATTENTION: no credit cards accepted, closed Fridays)
2 There is a crèperie in the village that offers a large variety of crèpes, hearty and sweet. Our suggestion: a crèpe with cheese, ham, lettuce, followed by a sweet crèpe Suzette and accompanied by a glass of cidre. You’ll love it. The ambience is very French with the tables outside in the narrow street. Open at noon and in the evening. Keep in mind that most French restaurants are closed in the afternoon and the evening meal starts at 7:30 p.m.
3 Fast food in Entrevaux? Yes, there is a pizza vendor who comes twice a week in the evening on Tuesday and Saturday. He parks on the place Moureau across the Var River (you can actually see him from the window). The pizza is quite good, order one for each person.
4 Coffee shops across the Var. All of them offer good coffee, good beer (try a panaché, beer mixed with Seven Up, it’s lighter, sweeter and quite refreshing on a hot day) and soft drinks.
Places to visit by car
1 Eze: a beautiful perched village between Nice and Monaco.
2 Grasse: a scenic drive through the mountains brings you to Grasse. It has a charming old town, nice shops and restaurants. Fragonard, an old perfume factory, offers free tours and has a gift shop with their products.
3 Antibes: the old town is wonderful with its harbor and fortifications. The Picasso museum is in an old castle right by the sea. There is also a footpath along the Mediterranean with the blue water on one side and villas and gardens on the other. It starts not far from the harbor.
4 Monte Carlo: beautiful buildings (a train station made from marble), wealthy people, expensive cars. To get into the Casino you need to be dressed up and pay a fee (50 euros?). However, you can enter the lobby for free. We think that Monte Carlo is especially spectacular at night when the yachts in the harbor are lit up.
5 Ile Ste. Marguerite: a twenty-minute boat ride from Cannes gets you to this wonderful island. There are only a few restaurants at the harbor, no cars are allowed and the vegetation is undisturbed, one of the few places at the Mediterranean coast that has preserved its original flora and fauna. Take a lunch along and relax at one of the many small coves—you’ll be transported back to the time when the Romans, Greeks and Phoenicians sailed past. There is also an interesting fort and museum (closed on Mondays).
Other things you need to know
1 There is an ATM in Entrevaux by the post office. There are also ATMs in Puget-Theniers, one by the bank and another not far from the church. There are plenty of ATMs in Nice.
2 Just a few steps from the apartment in the village is a small mom and pop grocery store, perfectly adequate to supply you with food and not more expensive than a supermarket. The vegetables are always fresh and of a very good quality, and there is a good selection of wine. On Thursdays, Didier, the owner, stocks up and the selection is the best, the veggies the freshest. It is closed midday and all day Monday but open on Sunday. In Puget-Theniers is a supermarket “shopi.” It is open all day Monday through Saturday. You can see the sign from the road.
3 A bakery is across the river and street. It opens very early and you can buy a fresh baguette or croissants for breakfast. It is closed Wednesdays, but then you can buy your baguette in the little shop in the village.
4 In general, small stores in France are closed midday and are open until 7 or 8 p.m. at night. That applies to grocery stores, bakeries, newspaper stores etc. Very large supermarkets like the Carrefour close to Nice-- you’ll see the sign on the right as you drive on the D6202 to Entrevaux--are open all day and Sundays.
5 Entrevaux has a pharmacy and a physician, Dr. Caruso. He speaks English and German. No need to make an appointment. Just go to his waiting room. A doctor’s visit costs 20 euros.
6 Next to the bakery is a newspaper store that offers international papers like The Herald Tribune and, among other things, telephone cards that can be used in the phone booth by the road.
7 There is a small library to the left of the little village store. It has one computer and you can check your email there at no cost. It is open Tuesdays 2-4 pm, Thursdays 4-6 pm and Saturdays 10-12 pm..
Experience the French “savoir vivre”
France | France enthusiasts know what it means to spend a holiday with passion. Discover the “savoir vivre”, the typical positive French approach towards life which focuses on the love for life. How better do it than from the comfort of a holiday home. Embrace country as well as people and discover France’s stunning beauty and diversity. atraveo customers have their clear favourites for holiday home vacations in France. One of the front runners is the beautiful Aquitaine with its endless Atlantic beaches and its idyllic backcountry. Also right at the top of the list is the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. This is not surprising as the region along the Mediterranean Sea combines two of France’s most beautiful landscapes, namely the Provence and the Côte d’Azur. In the Mediterranean Sea especially popular is Corsica, the “isle of beauty”.
However also the northern regions Brittany and Normandy are cherished and impress not only with their beaches but also with their beautiful rough landscape. The French Alps are ideal for hiking tours in the warm seasons and lure with their impressive alpine world countless tourists every year. During winter they provide for fun and variety on their snowy hills and slopes.
Further interesting destinations for a holiday home vacation in France are for example: The picturesque Burgundy, the Loire Valley with its numerous chalets, the idyllic Picardy, the history-charged Languedoc-Roussillon as well as Alsace and Lorraine.
