Burgundy | Come to one of the most historic and beautiful regions in Europe. It is shaped by vineyards, idyllic sleepy villages, vast fields and forests as well as a number of sights awaiting across Burgundy. The centre and capital of the former kingdom is the mustard city of Dijon with gothic Cathedral Saint Bénigne and royal palace. South of the colourful blossoming mustard fields is the famous wine growing area of Cote d’Or where the most original Burgundy wines are cultivated.
Many of the impressive sights that are spread out across Burgundy are the many castles, palaces, monasteries and churches. They are all witness of the traditional and varied history of this region. As one of the Christian centres in Europe an array of very well maintained Romanesque churches and monastery complexes can be discovered that are older than 1,400 years. Next to the more than a hundred old walls from the Middle Age and Early Modern Era there is a worthwhile attraction Guédelon Castle close to Auxerre. Since 1997 more than 50 workers have been working with traditional methods and tools to restore a Medieval castle. The project is regarded as a model example for so called archaeology in action as it provides a unique insight into the practical processes of past times. During the summer time the evolving building site building site can be visited throughout the day.
